How to get from to Florence from the airport

It’s easy to get to Florence from the airport – take a bus, taxi or hire a car. Overhead signs in the airport will show you where to go for all 3 options. You should have cash for both taxi and buses. You’ll find ATMS in the airport as well as en route to the taxi stand and bus stop. The 8km (5-mile) journey takes around 15-30 minutes, depending on traffic and which choice you make. 

Taking a Taxi from Florence Airport to the City

You’ll find taxis lining up at the airport taxi stand just around the corner from where you exit the airport. Alternatively, order a taxi by phone – call 055.4242, 055.4390, and 055.4798. If you prefer, you can download the It Taxi App which lets you order a cab on your mobile. 

Taxis generally take around 15 minutes to get from to Florence from the airport. Taxi fare is around €25 – that includes fixed €22 fixed plus €2.70 fare supplement from the airport. Don’t forget to add baggage fees. If you’re travelling at night, on a holiday or a Sunday, rates will be higher.

Fares and Tipping: In Italy, it’s not necessary to tip taxi drivers, but you should round up the fare to the nearest Euro. Taxi drivers often won’t accept credit cards, so make sure you have some cash – you’ll find ATMs inside the airport and along the route towards the taxi stand.  

To find the taxi stand, turn right upon exiting the airport, and walk along the front of the building to the end, then turn right to access the queue.

Taking a Bus from Florence Airport to the City

Volainbus operates a shuttle bus service between Florence Airport and the city center every half an hour from 5.30am to 8.30pm and every hour from 8.30pm to 12.30am. Journey is around 20 minutes. 

You can purchase the bus ticket from the driver (cash only) or inside the airport at Giunti’s Bookstor near the entrance. You’ll find ATMs in the airport and en route to the bus stop. Tickets cost €6 one-way, €10 for a roundtrip. Children under the age of 3 travel free. Shuttle bus timetables and station maps can be found here.

If you’re travelling early in the morning (5.30, 6 and 6.30am), or late at night (9.30, 10.30, 11.30pm and 12.30am), the bus will take you directly to Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence. The rest of the shuttle buses will drop you off at the bus terminal at Via Santa Caterina da Siena, 17. From there, you can either take a taxi or walk to some of the hotels and Florence attractions.

Picking Up a Rental Car at Florence Airport

There’s a free shuttle bus every 20 minutes or so from the airport to Palagio degli Spini, where you can pick up your airport rental car. You’ll find the shuttle bus stop just outside the terminal on the left. Take this map for an easy route.

Taking a Taxi from Florence to Florence Airport

Taxi journeys from Florence to the airport have a flat rate of €22 with baggage fees of around €1/bag (maximum 7 bags) added onto this. If you’re travelling at night, a holiday or a Sunday, the rate will be higher (€24 on Sundays/Holidays, and €25 from 10pm-6am. 

You can’t flag down a taxis in Italy; instead, head for marked taxi stands in various squares and around major tourist sights. Alternatively, order through the It Taxi App where you pay via mobile phone, or call  055.4242, 055.4390, and 055.4798. 

Taking a Bus from Florence to the Airport

The Volainbus shuttle bus will take you from Florence to the airport. Buses run every 30 minutes throughout the day, from 5am to 8pm, and then hourly after that till midnight. Journeys take around 20 minutes. Shuttle bus timetables and station maps can be found by following this link.

If you have to get to the airport early in the morning (5am, 5.30am or 6am) or late at night (9, 10, 11pm and midnight), the shuttle starts at Santa Maria Novella train station. The rest leave from the nearby bus terminal at Via Santa Caterina da Siena, 17.

Bus tickets are either available on the bus from the driver (make sure you have cash). You can also purchase them inside the train station at the AGENZIE 365 near the Trenitalia ticket office, at the BUSITALIA-SITA ticket office at the bus terminal or wherever ATAF bus tickets are sold. Bus fare costs: €6 one-way; €10 roundtrip and children under the age of 3 travel free.

Dropping Off a Rental Car at Florence Airport

You don’t return your rental cars to the car park at Florence Airport. Instead you have to go to Via Palagio degli Spini nearby. Once you’ve returned your car, you can hop on the free shuttle bus to the airport, which runs around every 20 minutes. 

What time to get to Florence Airport before your flight

Florence’s airport is small and has just 1 runway, so you only need to be there 2 hours before your departure flight. If you’re already in possession of a boarding pass, you only need to get there 1.5 hours before you leave to check in your luggage and head through security. If you need info, you’ll find the Tourist Information counter facing you in the airport’s main entrance.
